Idris Muhammad was an American drummer from New Orleans who began his career in the late 1950s playing rhythm and blues before working across jazz, soul-jazz and funk. His groove-oriented, New Orleans-inflected drumming and extensive session work brought R&B and funk rhythms into jazz contexts, evolving a rhythmically driven approach from the 1960s onwards.
