Denis Charles was a jazz drummer from St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands who began performing in the 1950s and became an active presence on the New York free jazz scene. He combined Caribbean rhythmic sensibilities with the looseness of avant-garde improvisation, bridging traditional percussion approaches and experimental free-jazz practices within the New York scene.
