Ruth Brown

Ruth Brown was an American singer from Portsmouth, Virginia, who began her recording career in the late 1940s and became one of Atlantic Records' leading rhythm and blues vocalists. Her emotive delivery and blend of R&B, jazz and pop informed a career that later moved into cabaret and theatre, and she was active in campaigning for better pay and recognition for rhythm and blues performers.
