Carl Sprague Ruggles
Carl Ruggles was an American composer born in Marion, Massachusetts in 1876 who began composing in the early 20th century within the contemporary classical tradition. His work is characterised by densely dissonant harmonies, rugged counterpoint and uncompromisingly non-tonal forms, evolving from late-Romantic textures into a distinct modernist idiom associated with the American avant-garde.
