Joseph Jarman was an American jazz multi-instrumentalist and composer from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, who emerged in the Chicago scene in the 1960s and was a founding member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. He blended free-jazz improvisation with avant-garde composition, incorporating reeds, percussion, spoken word and spiritual themes into performances and recordings, and later combined musical work with teaching and Buddhist practice.
