Jerry Garcia was an American musician from San Francisco who began his career in the early 1960s as the lead guitarist and vocalist of the Grateful Dead, a band associated with psychedelic rock, folk rock and Americana. He combined improvisational rock, folk, bluegrass and country influences in extended live performances and side projects, and his playing and touring practices became closely linked to the 1960s counterculture and the development of dedicated concert-going communities.
