Patrice Chéreau

Patrice Chéreau was a French theatre, opera and film director born in Le Mans in 1944 who began his professional career in the late 1960s with stage productions before expanding into opera and cinema. His approach combined psychological realism and rigorous attention to dramatic and musical structure, and over subsequent decades he applied this method across modernist theatre, operatic reinterpretation and contemporary European film, influencing debates about staging, performance practice and the relationship between theatre and music.
