Jim Black is an American jazz drummer and composer from Seattle who studied at the Berklee College of Music and became active on the New York improvising scene in the 1990s, leading ensembles and recording across jazz and experimental music. His work blends avant-garde jazz, free improvisation and rock and electronic influences, evolving from acoustic post-bop foundations into rhythmically intricate, electrified groups that have contributed to the downtown New York experimental-jazz milieu.
