Hans von Bülow was a German conductor, pianist and composer born in Dresden in 1830 who trained as a concert pianist in the Romantic tradition and began his career under the tutelage of Franz Liszt. He specialised in the repertoire of Beethoven and Wagner, later concentrating on conducting where he advocated contemporary composers, shaped orchestral discipline and helped develop modern conducting practice through posts with several German courts and touring ensembles.
