Joan Tower is an American composer from New Rochelle, New York, who began her career in the 1960s and co-founded the Da Capo Chamber Players, working primarily within contemporary classical and modernist traditions. Her music is characterised by rhythmic vitality, vivid orchestration and clear melodic gestures, and her output evolved from chamber works to large-scale orchestral and solo pieces that are part of the late-20th and early-21st-century American concert repertoire.
