Tony Iommi is an English guitarist from Birmingham who began his career in the late 1960s as co-founder and primary songwriter of the heavy metal band Black Sabbath. He developed a downtuned, riff-based playing style, adapted after an industrial accident damaged his fingertips, that contributed to heavy metal's emphasis on dark, distorted guitar tones and slow, powerful riffs.
