Sonatas for Cello and Piano nos. 1, 2

Album by Johannes Brahms & Emil Klein & Wolfgang Manz

Sonatas for Cello and Piano Nos. 1 and 2 are two chamber works by Johannes Brahms, published as Op.38 in 1865 and Op.99 in 1887 respectively. They exemplify Romantic chamber music, pairing song-like, lyrical cello writing with a robust, pianistic texture characterised by rich harmonic language, contrapuntal interplay and structural breadth, the first emerging from Brahms's earlier middle period and the second reflecting his later, more expansive chamber style.
