Symphony no. 1 "Winter Dreams" / Francesca da Rimini

Album by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky & Gewandhausorchester Leipzig & Kurt Masur

A first symphony and a later orchestral fantasy-overture are works by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, composed in 1866 and 1876 respectively. The earlier piece displays youthful Romantic lyricism, conventional symphonic structures and folktune-inspired themes, while the later overture employs darker, dramatic orchestral colour and programme-driven gestures that point to the composer's growing mastery of orchestration and narrative in his middle period.
