Worship
Worship music took off in the 1960s, primarily in the United States, when churchgoers decided a bit of musical flair could elevate the Sunday service beyond hymn-singing. Characterised by its emotive lyrics and sing-along choruses, it often sounds like a cross between a gospel choir and a pop concert, with just a hint of yearning that would make any soap opera proud. In many churches, this genre has managed to turn the humble church organ into the open-top sports car of acoustic instruments, whilst inspiring a surprising number of dodgy dance moves from the congregation.
