Techstep
Techstep emerged in the mid-1990s, mostly in the UK, when breakbeat fans realised mixing drum and bass with the cold precision of techno was the ticket to a very niche rave. Characterised by dark atmospheres, heavy basslines, and that delightful sensation of feeling like you're in a computerised dystopia, it’s the perfect soundtrack for your emotionally unstable cat. While it never quite became mainstream, it left a legacy that made many a dancefloor feel like a subterranean cyber-futuristic realm, where everyone secretly pined for the melodrama of a good old-fashioned ballad.
