Power Ballad

Power ballads emerged in the late 1970s and 1980s, primarily in the rock scene, where grandiose emotions apparently required both soaring vocals and enough guitar solos to power a small city. Characterised by dramatic lyrics and a slow build-up that often peaks with anthemic choruses, they are the musical equivalent of a good ol' cry whilst simultaneously blasting air guitar. These heart-tugging tunes have become staples at karaoke nights, turning even the tamest punters into emotional rock gods, if only for a few minutes.
