Postmodern

Postmodern music, which really got going in the late 20th century, is like a cheeky composition of influences, sampling everything from classical to pop and often trying to be deliberately ironic whilst claiming to be avant-garde. It sounds a bit like your mate’s Spotify playlist gone rogue, with disparate styles clashing harmoniously yet chaotically, where the only rule is that there are no rules and anything goes. This genre revels in its own eclecticism, reminding us that in music, as in life, contradiction is not just accepted but encouraged, much to the consternation of purists everywhere.
