Party music, which really came into its own in the 1980s, is the genre that insists every hour is happy hour and that good taste is merely a suggestion. Characterised by upbeat tempos, catchy hooks, and lyrics that are often more about dancing than deep thoughts, it’s the soundtrack to questionable decisions and regrettable dance moves. One could argue it plays a crucial role in social gatherings, essentially functioning as aural confetti that somehow convinces people to wear their most bewildering outfits whilst attempting to outlast one another on the dancefloor.
