Guitar music, having made its dazzling debut in the late 19th century thanks to the Spanish and a few lively blokes in America, is essentially all about six strings and a pinch of charisma, often used to mask any vocal deficiencies. Characterised by everything from the soft strumming of folk to the raucous power chords of rock, it can evoke feelings ranging from serene introspection to full-on fist-pumping exhilaration. It’s the musical equivalent of a Swiss army knife, capable of making you weep or dance depending on how much you’ve had to drink.
