Dembow

Dembow, originating from Jamaica in the late 1980s, is essentially the musical equivalent of a cheeky wink; derived from dancehall rhythms, it emphasises a repetitive drum pattern that would make a metronome seem indecisive. Characterised by its infectious beats and often explicit lyrics, it’s a genre that makes you want to dance whilst raising an eyebrow in bemusement at what you’re hearing. Surprisingly, what started as a local phenomenon has become a global sensation, with its beats popping up in everything from reggaeton to pop tracks, proving that a catchy rhythm can turn even the most mundane lyrics into something you can't resist humming along to.
