Concertante

Concertante emerged in the late 17th century, primarily in Italy, as a fancy way of saying 'let's make it a bit competitive and flashy' amongst soloists and orchestras. It's characterised by a delightful interplay between solo instruments and orchestral backing, often sounding like a musical duel where everyone’s trying to outshine each other without anyone throwing a chair. While it may not have made the top of the pop charts, its influence lingers on in concertos and has made classical music just a tad more interesting for those with a taste for rivalry.
