Carnatic
Carnatic music, which began its melodic life in the southern regions of India, is like classical music's more disciplined cousin, flaunting origins that stretch back to the 16th century, but with so many rules it could be a maths exam. Characterised by intricate rhythms, improvisation, and a penchant for using a whole load of Indian languages, it's the sort of music that leaves you feeling both uplifted and slightly dazed, as you try to keep track of all the notes they just flew through. This genre has proven so popular that it now boasts a worldwide following, making it the best excuse for a good sit-down and a cup of chai whilst contemplating the meaning of life.
