Anti Folk

Anti-folk emerged in the 1980s in New York as a cheeky counter to the earnest singer-songwriter scene, where musicians decided that sincerity was terribly yesterday and irony was in vogue. It often features whimsical lyrics and a lo-fi aesthetic, like if someone got a bit tipsy and scribbled their thoughts into a notebook, complete with guitar strumming that’s more playful than polished. It has since found a niche audience that appreciates a good parody, proving that music can be both mocking and genuinely heartfelt, albeit with a raised eyebrow.
