Ambient Jazz

Ambient jazz emerged in the late 1960s and 1970s, primarily from the experimental undercurrents of the jazz scene, where musicians realised that silence can be just as musical as sound—presumably during one too many tea breaks. It features mellow, spacious sounds designed to create an atmospheric experience, often resembling a calm chat with your mate whilst a saxophonist plays softly in the background, as you both ponder life’s great mysteries like why the biscuit tin is always empty. The genre has a charming way of making you feel as if you’re floating through a dream—until you accidentally spill your pint, at which point reality comes crashing back in.
