Aleatoric Music

Aleatoric music, which took off in the mid-20th century thanks to avant-garde composers who fancied leaving a bit of the heavy lifting to chance, is a genre that supposedly thrives on unpredictability. Its defining feature is the use of random elements in composition, which means if you ever wondered what a musical game of dice might sound like, this is it; don't be surprised if it sounds a bit like someone dropped a piano down the stairs. It’s not exactly music you’ll hum to yourself on the tube, but it does make for an excellent conversation starter about artistic intent—or lack thereof, depending on your perspective.
