Johann Baptist Cramer was a German-born pianist and composer, born in Mannheim in 1771, who established his career in London and worked primarily in the piano repertoire during the late Classical and early Romantic periods. He composed numerous piano études and salon pieces characterised by clear classical forms, refined fingered passagework and a gradual shift towards greater expressive lyricism and technical demand that anticipated aspects of Romantic piano technique, and he also worked as a publisher and teacher active in British musical life.
