Albert Lortzing was a German composer and actor who began his career in provincial theatre in the early 19th century and is best known for his contributions to 19th-century comic opera. His works, often in the Spieloper tradition, combine spoken dialogue with lively, melodic numbers and folk-influenced tunes, and he played a part in popularising German-language comic opera in the mid-19th century.
