Pavel Haas was a Czech composer from Brno, born in 1899, who trained at the Brno Conservatory and established his career in the early 20th century working within classical and modernist traditions. His music combines Moravian folk influences, neoclassical forms and expressionist harmony, evolving from early orchestral and chamber works to later compositions that reflect his Jewish heritage and the trauma of Nazi persecution, culminating in his deportation and death in a concentration camp which has informed the cultural understanding of his oeuvre.
