Jean Cocteau was a French poet, playwright, filmmaker and visual artist from Paris whose career began in the 1910s and encompassed a broad modernist output that intersected with theatre and musical production. Associated with the French avant-garde and interwar Parisian modernist circles, he engaged in interdisciplinary collaborations with composers, wrote libretti and stage texts, and shaped a theatrical and filmic aesthetic marked by surreal, poetic and experimental approaches to music and sound.
