Johann Mattheson
Johann Mattheson was a German Baroque composer, music theorist, singer and diplomat from Hamburg, born in 1681 and active from the late 17th century into the mid-18th century. He composed operas, cantatas and sacred music within the Baroque idiom and wrote treatises on performance practice and musical rhetoric that reflect contemporary debates about affect, ornamentation and the role of public music-making.
